She is currently research faculty at the University of Maryland in the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) and ecosystem science adviser for the National Ocean Service at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Innovation in Sustainability Science Award recognizes the authors of a peer-reviewed paper published in the past five years exemplifying leading-edge work on solution pathways to sustainability challenges.<\/p>\n<p>In the United States, Hurricane Sandy brought unprecedented attention to building resilience of coastal communities and ecosystems to the growing threats of storm surge and erosion. This has led to a focus on how both \u201cnatural infrastructure\u201d and \u201chybrid infrastructure\u201d that incorporates both natural and engineered features, can increase coastal protection.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11589\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vzbmt5sl65q.c.updraftclone.com\/esablog-preprod\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2016\/06\/Katya-Wowk-wetsuited-pose.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11589\" class=\"wp-image-11589 size-medium img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/vzbmt5sl65q.c.updraftclone.com\/esablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Katya-Wowk-wetsuited-pose-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Katya Wowk\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vzbmt5sl65q.c.updraftclone.com\/esablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2016\/06\/Katya-Wowk-wetsuited-pose-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vzbmt5sl65q.c.updraftclone.com\/esablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/2016\/06\/Katya-Wowk-wetsuited-pose.jpg 604w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11589\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Katya Wowk<\/strong>, a consulting social scientist for NOAA at the time of the study, is now senior associate for strategic planning and policy at Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies in Corpus Cristi, Texas.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Drs. <a href=\"http:\/\/suttongrier.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sutton-Grier<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harteresearchinstitute.org\/people\/senior-leadership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wowk<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfwf.org\/whoweare\/pages\/leadership.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bamford <\/a>provide an exemplary example of how the integration of ecological and social science can inform and increase the sustainable management of coastal ecosystems worldwide in a review of\u00a0\u201cThe future of our coasts\u201d in the journal\u00a0<em>Environmental Science &amp; Policy.<\/em>\u00a0They synthesize available socio-environmental science about natural and hybrid infrastructure, including an analysis of the state of the U.S. policy landscape for coastal resilience, and laying out the key policy opportunities and the challenges to implementing natural and hybrid approaches. Their analysis is placed in a real-world context that highlights the importance of their own research and that of others related to natural and hybrid infrastructure.
