Applying 4DEE in the Classroom: Finding R Way in the Woods: Teaching coding skills using forest census data
Wednesday, May 13 at 1 PM ET
Students now have tools that can write code in seconds—but if they don’t understand the code produced, they might miss the forest for the trees. To be able to generate, review, and understand code for scientific research, we first have learn the basics of data science, summary statistics and visualization using statistical software. For the chat, Paige will explain how beginner-to-intermediate R users can work with a large-scale forest census dataset from the ForestGEO network. Students run pre-written code, complete fill-in-the-blank sections, and write their own code from scratch, with increasingly complex tasks as the activity progresses. Bring your favorite beverage and watch the recording as Paige presents an overview of her module and some lessons learned from going through it with students.
